It may just be me, but it feels like we go through very strong fazes in the film industry. I could be wrong but this came out around the same time as Super 8, “The River” was just about to come on air and one of the Paranormal Activity movies were just releasing. Much like what happens with Zombies and Vampires I feel as  though we take a concept and bleed it dry.

This time, instead of dramatic blood sucking teens, we have “Shaky Cam”. One of my guilty pleasures. I happen to really like the idea of “Found Footage”/”Shaky Cam” movies. When done right.

Now this movie had a lot going on. It had teen drama (can’t live without that), Super powers and of course super duper shaky cam.

IMDB puts it as:

Three high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery. Soon, though, they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.

The movie had a great idea behind it, I mean com’on! Its kids with super powers! Can’t get more original than that, right?

Well… I didn’t love how they happened to get their powers, it was a VERY used up plot of “We found something, BOOM. We have powers”. Though I didn’t like how they GOT their powers, I did like how it built after they got them. There is a few fun scenes of them basically going around doing what anyone would do with super powers. Be stupid.

I also loved how they all got the same power (telekinesis) and to watch some characters struggle to get grips on how to use it, and others excel without a second thought.

Now the acting wasn’t the best I’ve seen, but it was a shaky cam movie! You can’t blame the acting. People in real life suck when being put in front  of  a camera, so in its sometime crappiness it helped itself making the overall scenes more believable.

The look of the movie was fine (shaky cam has a easy look make work). Also they used the powers in creative ways to bring us more interesting shots, which I loved!

The effects were good enough for what it was. You can tell that effects are fake, but it doesn’t distracted you from what else is going on. The cheesiness of the effects kinda grow on you too, setting the movie apart from others that try to take themselves to seriously.

Overall I thought the movie was worth a watch! I think this movie could have been much better if they decided to not go with the shaky cam look. You will find yourself wondering “Where did this shot come from?” or “Why do we see the security cam footage?” but its a small price to pay.

The plot is fun, and fairly easy to follow. Its a great “Popcorn movie”. Bring some friends over and have yourself a good ol’ time!
