Ruby Sparks (the movie, not the character) deals with some interesting ideas. Most of which I won’t go into to spare you the spoils but it of course starts to deal with the obvious topic of controlling people.

Ruby Sparks (the movie) is all about this guy Calvin who writes into existence a human being (ruby). Ruby being someone who assumes she is in a relationship with Calvin makes her self at home, settling into Calvin’s life.

Which starts off for Calvin to be very off putting and confusing. Though to progress the movie, he goes along with it. Effectively adding Ruby into his life.

Problems start to emerge as Ruby turns out to be someone who simply isn’t that compatible with Calvin. Though but to avoid breaking up with the girl of his dreams, he tries his hand at re-writing her.

This is when the idea of controlling people comes up.

As for whatever changes he makes to Ruby it seems to cause a domino effect and piles a whole new set of problems for him to deal with.

I won’t go much farther into what happens but to sum it all up, I found Ruby Sparks (the movie) to be a delightful treat. It did take my brain on somewhat of a wild goose chase as I wondered about the ideas of being able to re-write people to my benefit but I enjoyed this “Indie feeling” cute movie.

I love Paul Dano (along with the other actors in this movie) and the overall feel was lovely as well.

For a fun movie I’d by all means suggest watching Ruby Sparks. If for nothing more than to contemplate about being able to re-write people to speak french.

Boy was I wrong.

IMDB describes it as:

After their plane crashes in Alaska, six oil workers are led by a skilled huntsman to survival, but a pack of merciless wolves haunts their every step.

The whole movie takes place out in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of guys, after a plan crash. Every part of them “coping” after this trematic event was handled like you think it would be. Though I was pleasently surprised by the amount of AMAZING creative visual effects that take place in the tune of flash backs.

Its honestly something you’ll have to see for yourself to really appreciate it!

Through out most of the movie I was often shocked by the interesting and somewhat thought provoking scenes involving these flash backs!

So after they land crash land into this icy wonderland, they find that their life is being threatened by a pack of wild wolves! I found myself somewhat disappointed by the wolves honestly. They didn’t look all that real, and were often in very dark (un-seeable) shadows. Which I guess was the point. If it doesn’t look real, dont show it, right?

There isn’t much more I can say without giving the movie away, so I’ll end it with this.

The Grey is an excellent movie. It was shot well, had very creative/artsy scenes, and I found myself at the edge of my seat for most of this thriller!

If you can get past the wolves, you’ll find this movie to be (in the words of Dane Cook) a Cinematic Adventure! Its tense! Its gritty! Its manly! Its a great movie!

We’ve flown through space with Star Wars, We’ve traveled through time with Back to the Future, and now we are (hopefully) tackling a film based around a possibly not so distant future, with poverty, greed, and death.

I am not by any means implying that I think that The Hunger Games is the new Star Wars, Im just saying that I like seeing a movie like this handled in a way that feels epic. I feel like they have control over how this story takes place, and I feel pretty confident that they may take it higher than we expect.

Now please keep in mind that I have not read the books, so im judging this movie purely on the cinematic experience I had.

Set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl from the twelve districts to fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister’s place for the latest match.

Now The Hunger Games is set in the future where every so often each district has to select a boy and girl to take part in “The Hunger Games”.

The Hunger Games is a live broadcasted event to were each person has to run around killing each other, till only one person survives. Seems pretty simple and straight forward. Lets dive in.

This movie really impressed me on two fronts. First were the visuals.

I liked how in each different location we kinda were presented with a different camera style. At home we had this kinda shaky, “hard to watch” type of motion. Trying to express (in my opinion) how run down, and distressed that district was, and how everyone was poor, etc.

Then we come to the capital where the shots are fairly steady. We keep a more traditional shooting style and that kept the audience calm, cool and collected.  I liked that.

Second thing that caught my eye ear was the audio.

Now I consider myself to know a little bit about how audio can effect the tone of a film and for me, what really shined in this movie was the lack of audio at some points!

It was surprising how well almost no sound at all really kept me in that moment.

There is a scene were a explosion goes off and our man character’s ears are ringing. I loved this scene because other characters come into the shot (they heard the explosion from far away, so are unaffected by the noise) and they are yelling at eachother and what not. This is great because the audeaeice is hearing what the lead is hearing. Only ringing. You can kinda make out what the others are saying, but that wasn’t the point. I really found myself just amazed by that shot and how effective it was!

Overall this movie was great, and has alot going for it!

We have 2 more installments that will release in the coming years, and needless to say I am excited for them.

The Hunger Games took a “kids book” and turned it into something anyone could enjoy. Yes there are somethings that are clearly “silly”, but you will forgive them just like you would forgive The Avengers.
